  • Exercise and FUN

I always say if something is not fun; it’s not for me and I can only guess that others feel the same way.

Exercise is one of those things that needs to be fun if you want or expect people to get some activity into their lives.

Well the Swedes found a way to do this.   In the USA we suggest people take the stairs instead of the escalators to help combat obesity and to lose weight.  But I bet most still use the escalators.

    The Swedes?  Watch this video!

  • Wow – even more energy!

I, a sometimes cynic, am totally impressed with the energy I have of late.

In my cycling class, for the first time since I started over 2 years ago, I kept up with most of what the instructor was doing – I usually can not. [And she was into standing runs and sprints which I do not like and they generally wear me out quickly.]

But not now….I have been running – I am waking up very early which is an odd Fall pattern for me as I generally only wake up this early in the summer…

Where is all this energy coming from? The only change I have made in my life was to start taking a new fat loss product. It spares lean muscle as it targets fat. I can only guess that in losing fat [another inch in the waist and hips] I am changing something in my body balance and that is producing the energy….and I am exercising more strenuously because I have that energy…so I am burning more calories and … and … and …. Some of the ability to maintain the higher level of exercise may be the few accumulated months of taking another product that helps reduce soreness and stiffness due to physical activity or overexertion. It just may be that from now on it WILL take longer for me to wear out when I bike…We’ll see – and I’ll keep you posted.

I also tried an experiment for a few days last week. After exercising in the AM – I kept my heart rate monitor on for several hours. It’s true – exercising does keep you burning calories for hours afterwards – 200 calories an hour for me – up to 5 hours later [when I took off the monitor as the chest strap gets annoying.] I put the monitor on one day when I did not exercise in the AM.. I burned substantially fewer calories that day when all else was the same except for not exercising.

My body is functioning much better these days and I ain’t getting younger 🙂 so it’s got to be something else. I’ll keep taking the products because I assume it is they that are doing the good things for me as they are creating my personal version of healthy aging.

And I really have to add this – it’s making me money ! I am an associate for the company that markets the fat loss product. Neighbors are joining my business and/or just buying the product. They are impressed with my noticeable increase in energy and the lost inches! And in this economy – they love the idea that they too can make money…so it’s a win win win. Why ? This business model works well in a recession… right now who can’t use extra money every month?

  • Pre New Year

This week I got back into doing more exercising. Admittedly, I am one who takes exercise out of my schedule when I get busy knowing that is BAD for me! It’s usually bad for everyone – but most of us stop exercising when we have other things to do.

I started feeling more tired even tho I get sufficient sleep – so I felt too tired to get to the club and then of course the cycle continued. I was getting there for a cycling class but doing “serious” exercise only twice a week is not the best for me and it led to the tired feeling…..

So today I added yoga back into my schedule. In the summer I do yoga at home to the tapes I have – but as soon as it gets cold – which it did on September, my floor is too cold to stand on with bare feet – and so out went the yoga.

What finally got me back was the realization that we are entering celebratory season – and I love parties. So figured I’d beat the New Year Resolution crowd and be in great shape before January 1…besides I have a birthday coming up in January and I’d really prefer being in a whole lot better shape, and a few pounds lighter, than last year…which was not that bad a shape – but we can always improve on our health and I started on improving mine today..

And I really want to get back to playing squash before my D.C. friend comes in late December – so I don’t look like such a dork on the squash court when we play!

  • A confession [of sorts]

You know I love the effects of my exercising – and I suggest that we all need more exercise…

Well – like most people, when I get busy, “official” exercising is the first thing I start skipping.

So – when September rolled around and I got busy – I stopped going to my cycling classes. I did do that long kayak trip I wrote about and still did yoga at home – and of course went up and down the ramp several times a day and my dog got extra long walks….but my aerobic conditioning took a back seat.

In October I had a long talk with me and forced myself to start back to the cycling classes. Much to my own amazement and joy – I kept up as much as I usually did – which is not ever 100% as I have 30-40 years on most in the class including the instructor : – ).

I’m not sure it was a good thing for me to learn that I could take off a month with few repercussions – so I have promised myself I won’t do that again. It’s too chancy. Besides ski season is approaching and the legs and heart need to be in great shape for Mt. Hood.

  • Welcome to September

    Where did August go?

Seems it was just early August and now it’s early September….

For those of us who think of September as the start of a year [for whatever your reason] , let’s make a new new year resolution.

This year I will exercise more, I will eat well and I will do fun things!

Starting your year now will enable you to be in great shape when that “other” year starts : – )
