  • Scam alert!

I haven't posted about email scams in a while so it's time for an update.

The scammers are increasing their "volume" by saying  that they "know" you have been dealing with x, y and z [named persons] and you have to stop!  They are also using Barrister and Esq. in their names so you might think they are really lawyers.

Why do they do this? Most people get anxious when they get mail from attorneys.. [I have a law degree and I hate getting mail from legal entities.]

BUT – remember these scammers DO NOT KNOW YOU!

They are making idle threats to scare you into contacting them…

As the economy stays stagnant and people are out of work and hoping for a solution to money woes – a promise of inheriting millions that "someone" left to you has appeal.

But ask yourself – if they were legitimate wouldn't they know how to reach you via "real" mail and not be using email? and email that is not sent to your actual name.

If you have friends or family who you think might actually believe these emails – please pass this post along to them.

The reason we all keep getting this kind of email is that people actually DO fall for the scam because if not one did – they would stop!

  • DON’T FALL FOR THE SCAM WITH THE PUPPY DOG EYES!

             puppy

Sometimes the ad offers a free puppy.

Or, maybe a pure bred dog needs a new home.

The scam works like this: although the dogs are "free," the seller will ask to be wired money in advance so the puppy can be safely shipped to its new owner. Some victims have even gone to the airport to pick up their new pet only to discover there is no dog and they've been scammed.

A recent version of the "puppy scam" offered two registered English Bulldogs "free to a good home."  Fortunately, the scammer's attempt was thwarted because an alert Southern Oregon newspaper editor publisher smelled something fishy and refused to run the ad.

The puppy scam relies on the best intentions of animal lovers.  Another version of the puppy scam involves a con artist posing as a "puppy mill rescue group".  These ads claim to be seeking good homes for a batch of purebred puppies rescued from a puppy mill.  In reality it is the puppy mill operator who has posted the ad and is looking to cash in – sometimes asking $1,000 or more per puppy.

For more information about other puppy scams, and expert advice on humane pet adoption please check out the ASPCA Web site.

Anyone who believes they have been approached by a scammer should call the Oregon Department of Justice Consumer Hotline at 1-877-877-9392 or go to the Department's Web site: www.oregonattorneygeneral.gov.
  • LOL – sad but still LOL

I’m sorry if these get repetitious but I find them funny but sad as well since people do fall for them.   It’s another take on "you can get money here" scams.  First they scam you by promising that you can get money – then they scam you by saying you’ve been scammed    and that they can help you get your money back.

PLEASE STAY AWAY from all of these.

These are so like the old Nigerian scam letters that used to come in the mail box – but with widespread internet usage they have proliferated.  Sadly they abound since people do fall for them.  It’s a good deed to warn older family members and neighbors about these kinds of emails.

  • Open Season for Medicare and the 1st one turned me off already!

It’s that time of year again!  Open Season for Seniors!  Or is it Open Season ON Seniors?

[I was going to say "pissed me off" in the title but thought that would turn some of you off so I put that in in another way – so glad I use Thesis]

Open season, starting on Nov. 15th, is when you can change your Medicare Advantage Plans – but the mail starts flowing now!

Mailboxes get stuffed regularly – which is good for the Postal Service I guess.  But it is also a time of year that Medicare recipients are targeted by less-than-scrupulous persons and vendors.

And even from the scrupulous [I think] – one gets come-ons like "meet with us and get a free calendar!"  A free calendar?  The kind one gets for free from so many businesses for doing nothing?  Wow – sign me up – not!

I value my time and if you want me to look at your options make it easy; online or by being informative in your mailings.  And make your online information more comprehensive than the ad you mail.  I for one do not wish to meet with any sales person or give you information when your disclaimer lets me know I am "authorizing" you to contact me!

Maybe I am "allowing" you to contact me.  But authorize?  No way.  That means a sales person will call and call and call.  I get enough of those calls as is which is why I love Caller ID and the ringer shut off .

And please don’t belittle my intelligence and devalue my time by offering me a damned calendar in exchange for meeting with you!!

  • Money scams

My first post on the WordPress site and it’s about these ubiquitous scammers.

I know some believe these letters or they’d stop – but I sure hope that by posting on my blog – YOU don’t buy into this scam.

Clear alarms – It makes up agency names and does not write in correct English. "Real" Federal personnel would not be allowed to let this kind of writing out the door.

Then – It tries to scare you inot thiking you and your banking are being monitored.

Lastly it asks for all sorts of "compulsory" information –

let me tell you if the Feds wanted to find you – they know where you live.

Please do not fall for these and do let others know of these scams.
