• Yearning to Be a Cougar? How to Look Younger Than Your Age

Cougars! The latest description of women who like younger men.

[At least it’s no longer called “robbing the cradle” or “perverse.”]

Throughout history, there have been older woman-younger man pairings but without the surrounding publicity we now have via celebrity news and instant media. And because of this, the use of the term cougar has gone from a pejorative term to one that is positive and has hit the popular mainstream of today’s media love of anything sexual.

Historically men have been involved with younger women [often very much younger women] and that was acceptable. But women involved with younger men had not been so well received; that is until now. [And the younger man in the relationship was never belittled as much as the older woman.]

So – you want to be a cougar? Yes? Then go for it!

The 1st step in being or becoming a cougar is to not worry what others might think of you. If you worry about how those “others” view you – you need to develop some tough skin as there are some, maybe even your friends, who will not approve of your “going cougar.”

The 2nd step is to look your best. I’m one who thinks we all “look our age” because we are our age and that’s how we look. But that said – the more general population has myths about how older woman look. My article 5 Misconceptions About People Over 65 explores some of those myths.

Can we look younger? I’m not sure of that in reality, but we can meet the societal mythology of “you don’t look your age.” And we can do that by looking the best we can look.

And how do we look our best? And especially, how do we do this if we are over 40, 50, 60 or even 70?

Not by trying to look “young” in teenage type clothing! Sorry – but teen clothes are for teens – not grown woman. Few of us can carry off that skin-tight-belly-hip-showing style without looking like – well woman trying sadly to look like teens.

Instead be a great example of who you already are!

How?

• Lose the belly fat, exercise, and stretch.
• Be as lean and lithe as your body will allow and wear clothing that complements your body.
• Take care of your skin with water-based products; keep your hair neat and colored if you wish.
• And do wear some makeup.

Ready – set – go!!

Get out there and be a cougar!

• Stress and Women

If you are a woman, you are most likely not getting enough sleep – or enough exercise.

Why? Because, in spite of any changes in our cultures, women still have the most responsibilities. And when pinched for time, women forgo sleep and exercise. I know – because I do this too – for me it's the exercise….if I get busy, I don't go to the gym – knowing full well that any intention of "working out" at home – is really a feeble excuse to skip the work out entirely.

From a National Sleep foundation Study we learn:

"… that when pressed for time, one half of women responded that sleep (52 percent) and exercise (48 percent) were the first things sacrificed.

But when women were tired or ran out of time, 39 percent also reduced the time they spent with friends and family, 37 percent stopped eating healthily and 33 percent stopped having sex with their partner. '

• Find Your Strongest Life

Find Your Strongest Life

Marcus Buckingham

This book starts with the premise that women are unhappier than they were 40 years ago and that we need to find our “strongest’ lives and do things differently so that we are not unhappy.

Marcus cites research findings about women and happiness but to me, the research trained psychologist, I found myself asking what women, what ages?

I’m sure the woman reader of this book is in her 30’s or 40’s and would not be asking those questions. Women in this age range who work, are married and have children are more stressed – I know that in my 40’s as a single parent with a young child I lived and breathed stress.

Why all the stress and apparent dissatisfaction? Although the gap is not as large as it was, working women still do the bulk of home and childcare – making for really long days. And we still have an idea of "having it all."

Marcus offers some useful information about how to be happier and more successful in dealing with the life of work, home and he writes about doing this by seeking and finding your strong moments and accepting what/who you are.

He also suggests not trying to be perfect and creating imbalance in your life – two concepts that I totally agree with. And, in fact, my own recent e-book and articles try to convince new parents, especially moms, to stop trying to be "perfect."

There is very helpful information on how to find your strong moments by looking at what is your “life role” and making the most of what is your strength or are your strengths.

Additionally there are work and marriage-related suggestions for helping women be or feel stronger.

Overall it is a good feeling book and will be useful to those feeling stressed and wondering what is wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with you – you may need to re-think what you call happiness and find those areas Marcus calls your “strong moments.” To aid you, he has a website with his Strong Life Test at: stronglifetest.com

• Overweight women and exercise – will it make you fit?

Short answer – NO!

Exercise will not cut the risk of heart disease in those who are overweight unless they also slim down, according to a study of thousands of U.S. women….

"Even high quantities of physical activity are unlikely to fully reverse the risk of coronary heart disease in overweight and obese women without concurrent weight loss," Dr. Amy Weinstein and colleagues at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center reported.

Read about the study: can you be fit and overweight?
[This study,
begun in 1992, was carried out over the years and followed the women and their health issues.]

The major finding was that exercise is important, but so is being leaner. This is why I write and talk about weight and obesity topics a lot – especially as we head into that time of year when many people put on a few pounds more and exercise a whole lot less.

We have an ongoing obesity epidemic in the USA as well as in other parts of the world, and here it is not only is it hurting aging women, it is killing our children who are facing diabetes and other obesity related diseases at early ages.

PLEASE – keep your resolution to manage your weight and to be more active…you owe it to yourself and your loved ones…

Set a good example for your kids and grandkids…

• Mother’s Day – The original

This is my annual repost about the origin of mother’s day.

We have gotten so far away from the original thoughts and made it into a shopping spree day – like all our holidays!

Take time today to think about what Julia Howe wrote.

Mother’s Day Proclamation – 1870
by Julia Ward Howe

Arise then…women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”
Blood does not wipe our dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace…
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God –
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

Peace,
Lynn
