  • Growing Older? You Need A Sense of Humor

    Ah aging!

As I have gotten older, especially since I turned 65, I have been inundated with mail that goes into a category that I now call…….

    junk mail in box

Information for those about to die

The mail is about falling, tripping, funerals, cremation, or selling me insurance so my family can pay for the funeral or cremation expenses.

But I get nothing that ever tells me how to enjoy the rest of my life. It’s all about “you’re going to die so do something about it.”

One of the mail pieces I laugh at is from an insurer who thinks I am about to fall – so I am told I need to keep my floor free of things I might trip over.

But I seem not able to get my dog and cat to pick up after themselves, and so my floor has an array of balls, chew toys, and other roundish objects all over the place.

All this is in addtion to my having cords to and from charging phones and computers – as well as the fact that keeping my house clear of clutter is lower than lowest on my priority list.

I plan on enjoying my lfe; not worrying about dying!

  • Boomers and later-borns – a warning!

I've written about the economy and seniors before – but it is a message that needs to be repeated – so here it is again!

YOU SHOULD NOT BE DEPENDENT ON SOCIAL SECURITY

Social Security will post nearly $600 billion in deficits over the next decade as the economy struggles to recover and millions of baby boomers stand at the brink of retirement, according to new congressional projections.

Read more about these social security deficits.

No matter how old you are now – and even if you've been collecting social security for a while – you really need to have other sources or additional streams of income…

You'll feel safer and you'll be happier!

  • Monosodium Glutamate. Is it bad for you?

I can't tolerate MSG and avoid it when I can read a label. It makes me dizzy and nauseous. Sometimes after I eat some foods I feel the same way and after reading an email about MSG – I think I know better what is going on.  MSG or HVP [Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein / another name for MSG] is in a lot of food we eat at home or eat out – in both fast and slow food places and it is addictive!

What does MSG do?  It makes food "taste better."  This from the http://www.msgfacts.com  website.

MSG has been touted as a health benefit  – especially for older people as it causes them to eat more; although I would never equate eating more with getting better nutrition.

There have been studies showing that monosodium glutamate [MSG] is addictive and is related to obesity.  It is like nicotine in that it is a known additive that creates an addiction – but that no one wants to admit to.  It would mean taking on the food industry.  [The MSG fact website says it is not true that MSG is related to obesity.]

    www.truthinlabeling.org

Then today when reading posts on Facebook I saw a post from http://facebook.com/jane.e.johnson  [thank you]  indicating that MSG is in flu vaccines and here is the site she mentioned  http://truthinlabeling.org.  This site offers a long list of research related to MSG and its effects.

Rather than argue whose research is correct – I shall continue to avoid all food with MSG or HVP especially when I know what it does to me and my body and I keep read material like this.

Read the research and, as usual,  be the intelligent consumer I know you are.   Ask for the ingredient list and see if MSG or Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is listed in any of the foods on your plate.

  • End of 2006 coming soon

Wow – this year went by at warp speed for me…..and when we turn the new year, it becomes another year I have been in Portland as I moved into my “new” place in early January 2004. These 3 years went as fast as did 2006…. Is it as we age that years seem to go by faster? I don’t know – but one thing I do know is that I am going to start doing some serious research on the psychology of aging and finally do the “book” that I have thought about for a long time. At present my thought is to make it a combo of research along with interviews of “real” people …. We are not the same older generation as our parents or the boomers…we are different…

As I’ve said before, many of us still work because we like what we do. We are not sitting back and waiting for old age to creep up – we are out there “keeping on keeping on.” We are growing older better and we are setting an example for those “kids” behind us : o )
