I love windy days – and poems about wind.
Right now it’s really good kite weather, but I live in an area with a lot of trees, so I know what would happen immediately if I launched a kite – instead, I watch the trees and last Fall’s leaves blow around.
And listen to the wind while it blows my hair around my face.
When I was a kid, I loved poetry. I read it and even wrote poems – as well as books, plays, etc. Yea – I’ve always been into words.
A book I had as a child was poetry by Robert Lewis Stevenson, one of which was about the wind. I had forgotten about it until one of Paul’s prompts and had to go look it up – once I started reading it, I remembered most of the words.
I saw you toss the kites on high And blow the birds about the sky; And all around I heard you pass, Like ladies’ skirts across the grass– O wind, a-blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song! I saw the different things you did, But always you yourself you hid. I felt you push, I heard you call, I could not see yourself at all– O wind, a-blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song! O you that are so strong and cold, O blower, are you young or old? Are you a beast of field and tree, Or just a stronger child than me? O wind, a-blowing all day long, O wind, that sings so loud a song!
Robert Lewis Stevenson
I do admit, though, as I have gotten older, days of bitter cold winter winds have gotten to be a bit too much. Maybe if I had stayed in some of the colder regions I lived in, I would’ve gotten used to it, but I’ve moved around and gotten away from the cold climes. And for the past almost 30 years, I have lived in very windy areas – and do sort of get tired of the wind, as does my dog. We often prefer to stay inside and listen to it. But if it’s warm and sunny as opposed to cloudy, damp, and cool, we’ll go out and play in the wind. For her, it makes ball and frisbee catching more exciting.
Today, it was very windy. My friend told me that I would blow away when we went out to buy some more craft supplies. The rain came abruptly and left even more abruptly. What a crazy weather day this was!
This brings to my mind a song about “the wind beneath my wings”.
Today the wind was bringing me more snow. Hey it is mid April, enough with the snow. Summer is going to start in five weeks, on the calendar anyway.
